Five years ago, I was at a printing company and had stopped in at their breakroom for a cup. I noticed once again (how many times have you seen this) several dirty, community spoons left beside the sink for the next person to use. It just stuck with me that day. And, that night I was unable to sleep, thinking about how a self-stirring cup would be the answer.
Soon, my desk was covered with concepts and drawings for all sorts of self-mixing ideas. I cut styrofoam and glued plastic bits and even fashioned star and moon shapes that, when attached, also added the “grab” to move liquid in a glass. The winning idea, though, adds shaped vanes spiraling up the inside wall of a mug or glass that grab and push the liquid and swirl it rapidly, powered only by the user turning the mug itself.
We’ve been able to prototype and refine the final designs— they’re functional, attractive, and feel great in your hand, too. They make mixing any drink into an experience rather than just adding yet another mixing tool of some sort to your dishwasher.
