Twenty five years ago, while on a coffee break from jury duty, I poured myself a cup and noticed there were no spoons or stir-sticks in the room. Several people simply opted to take theirs black while others resorted to stirring in their coffee additives with salty fingers. I sat watching my lump of powdered creamer float in my cup and thought, there must be a better way to stir a cup of coffee without using a pencil stub, car key, or something else from the dark recesses of my pockets. It occurred to me that turning the cup a few times might actually get the coffee moving and mixing.

After several spins, the creamer disappeared and mixed stubbornly in — I patted myself on the back and drank my coffee. I decided then there must be a way to make the cup itself create more efficient friction to get the liquid swirling faster. Some kind of added vanes or blades that would act to grab the coffee (or other liquid) and spin it, mixing in the mixables. I could see it in my mind and it was good. And that's where it stayed for twenty years.
